Inventory Technology Comes To Los Angeles County Public Health
Soon you will not need to spend hours reconciling pieces of equipment listed on sheets of paper, searching for misplaced or relocated items... It will all be done with a bar code reader.

Administrative Services and Support section of Administrative and Financial Services, in conjunction with PH Information Systems and Materials Management is working with BarScan Inc. to bring Public Health's inventory control process into the 21st Century.

Using the new bar code system, the program/facility equipment coordinator will be given a bar code reader to read a bar code tag on each piece of equipment. The bar code reader will collect the information and save it in the reader. The reader will be returned to the PH Asset Management Coordinator to upload the information into a master computer database for logging and reconciling. Training of designated users will be provided upon completion of the initial inventory.

Certain items such as chairs, tables desks, and file cabinets that are currently on the master inventory will not be tagged based on its lifespan, cost or likelihood for loss.

Within the next couple of months, BarScan, Inc. will visit each facility to tag and record equipment.

Administrative Services and Support will contact each program/facility to make arrangements prior to the vendor's arrival. The vendor promises to try to ensure their visits are as nonintrusive and as efficient as possible.

Your cooperation with the vendor is requested to ensure a smooth transition.

Questions can be addressed by Mary Gomez, PH Asset Management Coordinator at (323) 890-7980.
